Okehampton Station

Opened on 3rd October 1871 Okehampton Station represents days of a bygone era. Located on the southern fringe of Okehampton and acting as the border between town and moor, the station sits at 750ft above sea level.

The rail approaches to Okehampton Station climb up 1 in 77 inclines to achieve the panoramic heights of the northern flank of Dartmoor. The design of the station reveals details of its exposed position with covered platforms and bridges.

The station when built came complete with sidings, a goods yard, and 70ft turntable. Presently the station is now a tourist attraction, and is home to a Hornby stockist, tea shop and Youth Hostel.

Okehampton Station is also home to a team of enthusiasts who operate the 'Dartmoor Pony', a tourism rail service between Okehampton and Meldon Quarry.

On the odd occasion a service is run during the summer from Exeter St. Davids to provide day tripping.

The Station provides an excellent start and finish point for our Low moor and Okehampton walks, and a handy stop off for a warming cup of tea and tooth-breaking scone (topped off with clotted cream obviously!)
